On Wednesday, April 24, Trinosophes hosts Spires That in the Sunset Rise.
They say, “Using a wide array of ethnic folkloric instruments, Spires That in the Sunset Rise perform psyche-folk with a broad, global awareness of other folk traditions. Covering ground from Appalachia to Morocco to Java, Spires delivers their charming original material in a raw, almost Art-Brute style with a Gothic veneer. Some numbers are more electric and are reminiscent of space rock. After five releases, they've condensed to a core duo, but still making as much sound as ever.
Opening the show will be the duo of Joel Peterson (strings) and Clara Hardie (violin). Doors at 8:30; $6 minimum donation.
On Friday, April 26, is Bhob Rainey, Bonnie Jones, Chris Cogburn.
“Amazing avant garde sounds from electronic circuit bender Bonnie Jones, visionary sax innovator Bhob Rainey, and percussionist Chris Cogburn. In 2010, after years of friendship and musical intersections frequently revolving around Austin’s No Idea Festival, Chris Cogburn brought this trio together for concerts in Texas (Marfa and Austin) and Mexico.
The trio brings together musicians who have performed and collaborated extensively in the improvised and experimental music communities of the US and abroad. Collaborating frequently with musicians like Greg Kelley, Andrea Neumann, Axel Dörner, Toshimaru Nakamura, Vic Rawlings, Tatsuya Nakatani and Christine Abdelnour among others. Their music explores structure and gesture at a bare and measured level, negotiating the distinct and precarious relationships between sound, space, performer, and audience. Their work has been called "a tightrope display of careful listening."
