Legendary (and we don’t use that word lightly) hardcore venue the Freezer Theater, located in the area formerly known as the Cass Corridor, has been demolished.
For just one year from 1981-82, the Freezer was the home of hardcore punk music in Detroit. As reported in Pizza Don’t Go Bad, it was stinky and illegal, and out-of-town bands like Minor Threat and the Misfits would play alongside locals like Negative Approach and the Meatmen.
Speaking to us in 2010, NA front man John Brannon said that, “The Freezer Theater was in the [Cass] Corridor, an old storefront. We'd been doing gigs there for about a year and a half and this bill was put together — Minor Threat, Meatmen and Negative Approach. In the parking lot, right where the Old Miami is, a riot started over something stupid. Somebody looked at somebody wrong, or somebody fucked somebody's girlfriend at some party. I've never seen anything like it. We were trying to get our equipment out of there. The cops were arresting everybody. Bricks through windows, blood. That was the end of the Freezer Theater."
And now the building’s gone too. RIP, Freezer Theater.
