City Slang: The Carr Center announces summer jazz classes

The Carr Center has announced a jazz academy series of free classes.

“The development of the Carr Center is the next step in the evolution of the Arts League of Michigan (ALM) and moves to establish it and ALM as major participants in the cultural life of our community and the nation. Named in honor of Virgil H. Carr, past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arts League of Michigan, this facility will be recognized as the premier center for African and African American cultural arts programs and activities in the nation.”

On Thursday, July 5, Ellen Rowe, the Director of the UofM Jazz Orchestra and noted jazz pianist / composer, will bring her performance and improvisational expertise.

On Thursday, July 12, Vincent Chandler, noted trombonist and UodM instructore, will teach techniques for the jazz horn.

On Thursday, July 19, Ursula Walker, award winning jazz vocalist, will direct the master class drawing on her long career as a leading performer.

Classes start at 12:30 p.m., and are absolutely free. Find out more at the Carr Center website.
