Apparently, there is a God and he isn’t quite as pissed with Metro Detroit as we might have thought.
Violently terrible Kansas City alt-post-grunge monstrosity Puddle of Mudd have pulled out of this year’s Arts Beats & Eats Festival, with our own far superior Sponge replacing them.
It could have something to do with the fact that Puddle of Mudd (or POM) singer Wes Scantlin can’t stay out of trouble. And not in a “I’m a rowdy rock star, look how naughty I can be” sort of way, but more in a “I’m the crazy guy next door, keep your music down or I’ll kill your dog” sort of way.
Spin.com reported on July 26 that Scantlin had been arrested for taking power tools (a buzz saw and/or a sledgehammer) to his neighbor’s patio. His neighbor is Russian electro-pop artist Sasha Gradiva. Be sure to check out that Spin link – there’s a video of Scantlin defending his actions to a giggling paparazzo.
“She fucking hates me,” Scantlin sang, though that’s not thought to be connected.
So Sponge is in. According to a statement, “Detroit rockers Sponge have been tapped to replace Puddle of Mudd at this year’s Arts, Beats and Eats in Royal Oak, Michigan. Sponge will perform on the Michigan Lottery National Stage on Monday September 2 at 6:45 pm. It will be the third time the Gold-Certified act has played at the popular festival, which draws thousands of attendees annually.”
“It’s the last big party of the summer and we look forward to getting everybody fired up for MC Hammer and putting on a no holds barred rock show!” declared Vinnie Dombroski, Sponge’s lead singer.”

The band’s new album, Stop the Bleeding, is unleashed September 17. “Sponge will commemorate the release of “Stop The Bleeding,” with “Sponge Day” here in Metro Detroit. The inaugural celebration scheduled for Friday, September 13th will include a VIP barbeque/meet and greet with fans and a special, all-ages live performance from Sponge later that evening at the Diesel Concert Lounge in Chesterfield Township, Michigan (Detroit suburb). Doors are at 7pm.”
