The Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor played at the UDetroit Café on Thursday evening as part of the Motorcity Special web broadcast that also featured the Trash Brats and, of course, City Slang on the bill.
The Sisters is an interesting little trio. In 2009, reviewing the self-titled LP for the Metro Times, Lee Devito said that, “Since forming in 2005, the artists formerly known as SikSik Nation have built a homegrown following based on the strength of their trippy live shows.”
”Trippy live shows” is right. This is the first time I’ve seen this band play, but it won’t be the last. Tonight at least, they have a drummer who stands up and bashes on a snare and floor tom, plus a bassist who uses a violin bow Jimmy Page-style, and a front man / guitarist who really seems to worship at the altar of Jim Morrison.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is undeniably true. Steve Morrow’s voice is so Morrison-esque that it wouldn’t be unbelievable if told that he studies the Doors man’s vocals like a scientist with a bug. He shakes his hair like Morrison, closes his eyes in that "I’m feeling the music" way like Morrison, and even wiggles a little like Morrison.
Putting that comparison to one side though, however hard that might be, the Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor is a fascinating, psychedelic, melodic and passionate band, and there can’t ever be enough of those.
