Marshall Crenshaw will be hosting an hour-long salute to the early years of WABX on his radio show the Bottomless Pit on April 7 at 10 p.m., on wfuv.org. WABX in the late ‘60s and 70’s is of course considered a golden era for Detroit radio, featuring such characters at Jerry Lubin, Dave Dixon, Jerry Goodwin, Dennis Frawley, Larry Miller and Tim Powell - the Air Aces. It should be a fascinating program.
While the New Bohemian isn’t quite ready to host shows in its new venue (more on that soon), it is instead hosting a show at 2739 Edwin, Hamtramck on Saturday, March 24. The show features Jürg Wickihalder and Ian Ding. Doors at 7, $10 cover.
According to a statement, “Former Detroit Symphony Orchestra percussionist and New Music Detroit founding member Ian Ding returns to town, bringing the noted Swiss composer and soprano saxophone Jürg Wickihalder with him. The duo will be performing music by Wickihalder, whose post-bop music has drawn comparison to pianists Thelonius Monk and Herbie Nichols, as well as fellow soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy.”
Also on March 24, at Smalls in Hamtramck, new promotions company MusicMovers will be hosting its first show. Brae, Black Carl and the Juliets will be performing from 8 p.m., cover $6. According to the release, “Detroit's own pop-rock group, Brae, complements the upbeat, melodious sounds of The Juliets. Add west coast based funk and R & B rooted rock band, Black Carl, to make a stellar evening of indie music!”
