Now, normally I only write about local bands for City Slang. That’s kinda the whole point of the thing. But this story is relevant, and it shows that the people of Detroit have great taste. Damn, this almost brings a tear to my eye.

It would seem that terrible, inexcusable Canadian fop-rockers Nickelback have been invited to perform at halftime during the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving game vs. the Green Bay Packers.

This is wrong for so many reasons, not least because of the amount of musical talent that exists in this city, or that has come out of it. We really don’t need to outsource, and especially not to one of the most diabolical musical outfits in existence.

So what did our awesome Lions fans do? Did they accept it and tuck their tails between their legs? NO! They started a petition, and it’s gathering steam fast, even picking up some national media attention.

The petition was started by Dennis Guttman, a grad student at the University of Michigan. Dennis, we salute you sir.

Now, the petition has more than 30,000 signatures. Add yours to it HERE.

Here are some of the messages from those that have signed already:

“I am a 30 + year season ticket holder with a vow never to be seen at a Nickelback show. I shouldn't have to choose between the Lions and Nickelback.” -- Scott (Royal Oaks, MI)

“I know things are rough here in Michigan, but come on Detroit, that's low.” -- Ashley (Menominee, MI)

“As a Canadian I sincerely apologize for Nickelback. We're all really sorry up here.” -- Lloyd (Calgary, Canada)

Now it’s your turn, Detroiters. Do your part.
