My Brightest Diamond’s None More Than You EP (Asthmatic Kitty), out in July, precedes her full length This is My Hand album which comes out in September. So it’s kind of an appetizer, and it’s delicious. Apparently, Shara Worden recently moved to Detroit, planted a garden and gave birth to a baby. We’re delighted she’s here because, on this evidence, she’s a tremendous artist, blending folk and electronica in a Tori Amos sort of way. Add some Kate Bush and you’re about there.
OK, this is interesting. Backstab the Kingpin sent us his self-titled album, an enjoyable if slightly puerile hip-hop effort that tells tales of loose women and hard drinking. It’s good fun, truth be known. Just put your intelligence away for a while. Weirdly, the CD arrived accompanied by a book, Drinking Hip Hop, written by William Bane. It’s an odd little volume, a semi-biographical look at Backstab the Kingpin’s life. Lots of hookers on the Cass Corridor, lots of drugs. No surprises, besides the fact that this book got written at all.
