The man that’s keeping some Detroit at Motown Records, Grammy-nominated Kem, announced that major accomplishments were made with this year’s Mack & Third event that was held at Detroit's Cass Park on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at a post-event reception last night for sponsors and partner/recipient organizations.
According to a statement, “KEM presented each of the ten 2011 partner/recipient organizations with donation checks that represent monies that were raised at the event. KEM also announced initial plans to host the event again in August of 2012, which would be his third year hosting the event (2009, 2011). Mack & Third is an all-day free concert, fundraiser & food drive to benefit Detroit’s homeless community.”
“There were so many people and so many hearts and minds that went into making the 2011 Mack & Third event a great success, and I really appreciate everyone involved,” said KEM. “It’s always a positive thing for me in terms of providing the event and helping the homeless, and it’s also another beacon of light for the City of Detroit, and that can’t be underestimated. So it’s really important for me to continue to do this work that we’re doing in honor of our great City and the great people who reside here.”
It is a worthy cause too. Apparently, “The idea for Mack & Third was born in early 2009, when Detroit was hit hard with the economic downturn and high unemployment rates. During this time, KEM, who himself was once homeless and addicted, had the idea to bring people together, keeping the thought that “music soothes the soul” in mind. KEM hoped to bring some healing to the City by organizing a community service event to help the homeless and to provide a getaway for Detroiters from the stresses of the economy by sharing his music. KEM presented the first “KEM Live @ Mack & Third: A Call To Service” event, a free, public all-day concert and food drive on Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Cass Park in Detroit.”
