I’m not knocking anything, honestly I’m not, but after attending Arts Beats & Eats almost ritualistically for the past few years, there’s a lot to be said for forgoing the insane crowds and attending a festival where parking is easy and there is no cover. I hear that great things are also happening Downtown at the Jazz Fest, but this year it’s the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival for me.

This, by the way, is my nine-month-old son Dylan’s first rock ‘n’ roll experience, and he took it in his stride, the little rabble rouser. Bad Indians has the honor of being the first rock band he ever saw (I did take him to the Concert of Colors, where he saw a Caribbean band), followed by Feelings, followed by the Sugarcoats.

Everyone was great too, but the real joy on Saturday was being able to eat reasonably priced food (including a paczki) and wander amongst like-minded people on a beautiful day, without clipping heels and having one’s own heels clipped. My kid got to dance without imminent danger of being stepped on. Fantastic.

Festivals are a wonderful thing, and here in the Detroit area it is a blessing that on Labor Day weekend, there are three fantastic, aforementioned festivals all going on at the same time to choose from. Next weekend is Dally in the Alley, and the weekend after is the Ferndale DIY Street Fair. Holy crap, we’re lucky.
