On Saturday, Frank Pahl will celebrate his 35th birthday by performing with his band Little Bang Theory at Metal Off Main (220 Felch St., Ann Arbor). The band will perform original music to the Wladyslaw Starewicz classic animation The Mascot. Opening the show is Clem Fortuna’s Microtonal String Quartet.

If all of that sounds arty and challenging, well, it will be. But try not to close your mind at the mere mention of experimental folk music and foreign animation. Pahl is something of a Detroit gem, and this show will be something well worth experiencing. Plus, admission is free.

The Metro Times wrote of Pahl that he is a true original. “He charms his public with lovely avant-garde melodies played on an impressive array of neglected acoustic instruments and homemade automatons. When he decides to write lyrics, they take the form of bittersweet stories.”

Little Bang Theory involves Pahl’s collection of musical toys, hence the animation soundtrack. Fascinated? You should be.
