The Detroit Symphony Orchestra will pay tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers with two performances in November.
According to a press release, “The world’s most famous dancing duo will be celebrated in “Fred & Ginger: Dancing and Romancing”, with performances by Kirby Ward and Joan Hess, both vocalists and dancers, along with DSO Assistant Conductor Teddy Abrams conducting. These Pops Series program performances will take place on Friday, November 1 at 10:45 a.m. and Sunday, November 3 at 3 p.m. and will include songs such as “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Cheek to Cheek” and more!”
“Kirby Ward has worked in the arts on five continents and in film, television and stage for almost thirty years. He has been a resident of Los Angeles and London and now makes his home in Connecticut, but he continues to work in theatre and film all over the world.”
“Joan Hess just completed her fifth Broadway show, playing the role of the wealthy and hilarious Tanya in Broadway’s Mamma Mia. She was also seen as Jessica (the “Leggy Blonde”) in HBO’s Grammy award-winning comedy series, Flight of the Conchords. She recently had the great honor of working with television’s iconic director Jay Sandrich when she played Doris in Same Time, Next Year. Prior to that, she had the great fortune of playing the plum role of Billie Dawn in Born Yesterday. Hess was also featured on Broadway as Patsy in Crazy for You, as Edie and Hattie in Kiss Me Kate and as Sophia in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. She appeared at the Lincoln Center in the lead role in Dessa Rose, the powerful new Lynn Ahrens/Stephen Flaherty piece. She appeared as Betty in the First National Tour of Sunset Boulevard, Polly in the First National Tour of Crazy for You, and she toured the country with 42nd Street and Beehive, as well.”
