The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has announced that it will launching the first-ever New Music Readings for African-American Composers by the DSO, in conjunction with EarShot (a nationwide network of readings and composer-development programs administered by New York-based new music-focused American Composers Orchestra).
Four African-American composers will participate in this year's readings: Jonathan Bailey Holland of Boston, MA; Erica Lindsay of Rosendale, NY; Kevin Scott of the Middletown, NY; and Matthew Evan Taylor of Miami, FL. The readings will all take place in Detroit on Sunday, March 9, led by DSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin along with four mentor composers.
According to the press release, “On Monday, March 10, professional development workshops will be held from 1-7pm, for the participating composers as well as the public. The workshops include "Composing and Identity," which explores ways that identity impacts a composer's career and music, led by MacArthur Fellow and President Obama’s first appointment to the National Council on the Arts Aaron Dworkin, founder of the Detroit-based Sphinx organization (sphinxmusic.org), along with several prominent composers. Other workshops discuss copyright law, funding and support structures for composers, and the evolution of the concert music industry.”
