Black Jake & the Carnies will celebrate the fifth anniversary of their first ever gig with a show at the Circus Bar in Ann Arbor on November 9. Music starts at 10.30 p.m., and there is no cover for over 21’s. 18+ pay $3.

In the band’s own words, “The date was November 18, 2006. Ypsilanti mainstay, the Wood Nickel, was playing host to a fundraiser to benefit SOS Community Services. That night, for the first time, six young men stepped out of obscurity and onto the stage to claim the title that was rightfully theirs: The Original Kings of Crabgrass.”

Crabgrass, but don’t call them bluegrass. The band were the subject of a recent City Slang column, and Mark “Gus” Wallace said that, “I hate bluegrass. I can’t stand it. I go to bluegrass shows and it bores the shit out of me. Bluegrass is five virtuosos standing in a line playing as fast as they can. Somebody stops singing and somebody jumps up, wails off a solo, pretending it’s not a big deal, then they stand back and everyone’s like, oh that’s awesome. It’s boring. There’s no soul to it, no depth, no power. What we do comes out of rock ‘n’ roll and punk rock.”

Of this show, the band says that, “On Wednesday, November 9, to celebrate the wooden anniversary of that Wooden Nickel show and all their accomplishments since, they will be providing a special night of music at the Circus Bar in Ann Arbor, playing music new and old from 10:30 into the wee hours. Expect nothing short of a true carnival affair, complete with games prizes, bright lights and flame.
