On Thursday, August 25, the New Dodge in Hamtramck will host a benefit for Jerry Younkins, “Detroit’s first hippie”. The evening will include music, poetry and art from, among others, Michigan Basement, Catlistening, Gary Quackenbush and Karen Neal. The poster has been designed by Carl Lundgren
Younkins was an active artist in the LA, San Fran and, of course, Detroit art and music scenes of the 60s. He used to bring his light show, “The Magic Veil”, to crowds at the Grande Ballroom.
Elsewhere, national disco-indie-emo band Panic! At The Disco is looking for a local band from across the country to open for them at a show called Charter Center State, which will take place on October 15 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis.
There are plenty of Detroit bands that could rock this, so get submitting. There’s a Facebook page and a microsite. The show will be streamed live on that Facebook page.
Finally, congratulations to Don Was, who has been named the Chief Creative Officer of EMI’s Blue Note Records label.
Blue Note Records was founded in 1939. Artists signed to Blue Note today include Norah Jones, Amos Lee, Jeff Bridges, Keren Ann, Robert Glasper, Bill Charlap, Joe Lovano, Priscilla Ahn and Jason Moran. Hopefully, Was will be able to bring some Detroit talent into the label.
