Mainstream listeners were likely introduced to Cat Power through her heartbreaking cover of Phil Phillips’ 1959 “Sea of Love” — just one of the 12 haunting song reinterpretations on her 2000 cover record.

Though Wanderer — Charlyn “Chan” Marshall’s forthcoming record and 10th in Cat Power’s discography — features a cover of Rihanna’s “Stay,” what is most powerful is her vast dedication to deeply personal musings that toggle between restless poetry and hazy dreams.

“The course my life has taken in this journey — going from town to town, with my guitar, telling my tale; with reverence to the people who did this generations before me,” Marshall says in a statement. “They were all wanderers, and I am lucky to be among them.”

Cat Power will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8 at the Majestic; 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313-833-9700; majesticdetroit.com; Tickets are $35-$40.
