In the months since the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the folks at Detroit JazzStage have been putting the festival’s Jazz Tent talks online. The discussions include the history of the Detroit proto-rock hit “The Hucklebuck,” the story of the Hammond B-3 in jazz and the spirituality of Alice Coltrane. A panel helmed by yours truly examined the life and legacy of John Coltrane with a stellar cast: Coltrane colleagues Jimmy Heath and Benny Golson, Detroit saxophonist Faruq Z. Bey, jazz writers David Adler and Ashley Kahn (the latter being the author of A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album). JazzStage’s Dean Sahutske gave us word a while ago that the “Trane’s Freight” panel had been posted.
Among the talk’s highlights is confirmation of an oft-repeated yarn in which Miles Davis, Coltrane’s employer at yarn-time, advised him on how to wrap up those ever-longer solos: Take the horn out of your mouth.
