Step into Goodnight Gracie's in downtown Royal Oak and the disco ball will probably already be spinning. It'll be dim and the walls will look purple, though we suspect that's just the lighting. And while this place bills itself as a jazz and martini bar, it's likely current popular music will be playing. We think we heard some Jack White on the radio here last week.
Sister location to its next-door neighbor D'Amato's, Goodnite Gracie's is tucked away from the strip of bro-bars on Royal Oak's Main Street, a couple of blocks even from Pronto and Oak City Grille. It's not too far to walk from Blackfinn or Ale Mary's, but far enough that it's got to be a destination. Basically, you're not going to just stumble into this place, and thankfully the rest of the crowd is also there because they choose to be. Not because it happened to be the place next door.
As meticulously chosen as its location, the menu at Goodnite Grace's is specially curated. In keeping with its jazzy theme, the menu is comprised of 23 different martinis, many of which are made with Tito's Handmade Vodka. The Dirty Martini is made with either Tito's or Pearl Gin and olive juice. The Lemon Drop is Citrus Pearl Vodka, Lemoncello, and sour mix with a sugar rim and lemon twist. The Pomegranate is Stoli Blueberi, Pama Liquor, Cointreau, and a lime twist. The Sour Raspberry is made with house-infused raspberry vodka, Chambord, cranberry juice, sour mix, and lime.
Alongside their martini menu is a collection of cocktails and a few craft brews. The Strawberry Mule was recently featured at Vodka Rox, and it's only one in a collection of Moscow Mule-inspired drinks. On tap, Gracie's offers selections from Griffin Claw, and in the fridge there are bottles of familiar beer brands.
In terms of actual jazz, Goodnite Gracie's offers live music Tuesday-Saturday. Tuesday nights have the John Arnold Trio playing jazz from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., Bobby and James from the Reefermen host an open mic on Wednesday nights from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Thursday nights have My Friend's Band playing an acoustic set starting at 8 p.m. There's an acoustic set every Friday night, and on Saturdays DJ Josh Adams spins funk, old school '80s, '90s hip-hop, house, and dance.
While Gracie's is usually open only at night, Sundays are a special exception. Grab brunch here from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and make your own Bloody Marys, enjoy the bottomless mimosas and the requisite brunch staples that play second fiddle to the booze. The Jalopy Brothers play jazz from noon to 3 p.m.
With its warm vibe, tasty drinks, good music, and disco ball, Goodnite Gracie's has been a staple in downtown Royal Oak for years, and will likely stay that way for years to come.
