Barbat Holdings, a West Bloomfield-based real estate investment and management firm, has announced its acquisition of the iconic Commerce Township restaurant It’s a Matter of Taste, marking the end of an era for the lakeside dining venue.
In its place, the company’s hospitality arm, Prime Concepts Detroit, will launch Aurora on the Lake, an upscale Italian restaurant and event space.
Located at 2323 Union Lake Road on 11 scenic acres overlooking Union Lake, It’s a Matter of Taste has been a staple in the community since 1990, offering fine dining, gourmet catering, and private event hosting. While the property transitions to Aurora on the Lake, renovations are slated for completion in early 2025, and operations will continue without interruption.
The revamped space will feature a 200-person banquet facility and a new menu, blending refined Italian cuisine with the hallmark offerings of Aurora Italiana, Prime Concepts Detroit’s flagship restaurant brand. It’s a Matter of Taste’s beloved gourmet carry-out service will also remain, now featuring an expanded selection of Italian delicacies.
Aurora on the Lake aims to elevate the dining experience with stunning lake views, exceptional hospitality, and a menu boasting fresh seafood, premium steaks, and authentic Italian dishes inspired by the Amalfi Coast.
“The acquisition of this stunning lakeside property perfectly positions us as we continue to grow our real estate holdings along with expanding our hospitality offerings,” Joe Barbat, chairman and CEO of Barbat Holdings, said in a statement Thursday. “We’re excited to bring the Aurora Italiana brand to the Commerce Township community and create new traditions and memories at Aurora on the Lake.”
All current employees of It’s a Matter of Taste have been invited to stay on as part of the transition, joined by seasoned staff from Aurora Italiana to oversee restaurant and culinary operations.
Aurora on the Lake marks the latest milestone in Barbat Holdings’ growing portfolio of prominent properties across southeast Michigan, which includes the former Briggs Hotel, the St. Regis, and Detroit’s Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Building. The latter now houses Sexy Steak, an upscale steakhouse, and Castle Hall, a premier event venue.
“With its original location opened in September 2023, Aurora Italiana, one of metro Detroit’s premier dining destinations, captures the Amalfi Coast's coastal flavors and dining experiences,” said Stolion Liti, managing partner and director of operations at Prime Concepts Detroit. “Aurora on the Lake will bring these beloved traditions to Commerce Township. We look forward to serving the community and look forward to earning the privilege to become its new favorite dining destination.”
