Go 'Out to Brunch' in Ferndale this Saturday

Just when we think the brunch trend has peaked, it seems to find a way to become ever more firmly entrenched in American life. Not that we ever resisted the appeal of an hours-long drinking session over breakfast-like fare. Hey, we like a bottomless Prosecco mimosa as much as anybody else. It's just that we thought of brunch as more of a coastal thing: New York noshers and L.A. lollygaggers have their choice of hip, easygoing cafes for languid weekenders, whereas we figured Midwesterners wanted the 6 a.m. Hungry-Man special so they could doze off in their pew at church.

How wrong we were: The insane popularity of brunch in metro Detroit has grown to the point where It's official: The brunch craze has become an institution, now represented by an annual event celebrating the hottest meal of the day. It's called "Out to Brunch," and it takes place at the Rust Belt Market in Ferndale.

The menu has firmed up a bit since we last wrote about it. There may be last minute changes, but the event promises a "day after Thanksgiving" feast from Rock City Eatery, salmon-topped crostini from Yemans Street, stuffed brioche French toast from the Bosco, pumpkin spice waffles from Bobcat Bonnie's, cinnamon rolls from Parks & Rec, waffle bits from Zeke's, jerk chicken and allspice waffles from St. Cece's Pub, and wings and chorizo sauce from Rose Catering. Alcoholic offerings will include a Ketel One Bloody Mary bar, Ciroc mimosas and bellinis, Zeke's signature Bloody Mary and flavored mimosas from the Bosco. The market will be open as usual, permitting guests to stroll and shop while they swill and snack, maybe even making that impulse buy.

The event runs 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Rust Belt Market, 22801 Woodward Ave., Ferndale; tickets are $40 in advance at neptix.
