Five things you need to know about Detroit dining this week

Sausagefest! — To paraphrase an old adage, "Those who love sausage should never see it being made." But what about seeing it being eaten? Now, how about seeing 20 feet of it being eaten? That's the concept behind the "Wurst Challenge," a fund-raising, stomach-stretching competitive eating event that was inaugurated last year. It pits a few eaters against the clock and each other, all to help fund the FLY Children's Art Center's Creativity Lab in Ypsilanti. The competition will include roboticist Cre Fuller, defending champion Jason "Knifebeard SausageHawk" Youngs, and Kate "Holy Kow!" Stroud. Contestants will try to finish it all, or will vie for such awards as "greatest sense of style." Watch the fun or try to register to compete. Bake with the best — Do baking classes sound ho-hum? If so, take a look at what sort of baking classes are coming up at Zingerman's "Bake," the nationally renowned hands-on teaching bakery. Not only is it a great way to learn the recipes that have seen Zingerman's Bakehouse through 22 years, it's a great way to meet illustrious guest instructors, such as nationally acclaimed pastry chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, and television personality Gale Gand (April 29), Memphis bakeshop owner Kat Gordon (June 3), and Australian market owner Kirsty Carre. Million-dollar deal — Until April 12, diners at Morton's Steakhouse will be able to take advantage of the "Prime and Wine" special, featuring a glass of "The Investor," from Stag's Leap Winery in Napa Valley, paired with the Million Dollar Burger, which features everything from a prime patty to foie gras to black truffle butter to braised short ribs, all for only $39. Detroit goes Mexican — Few art exhibits at the Detroit Institute of Arts have gotten as resounding a welcome as the new one dedicated to Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's time in Detroit. Even local restaurants are getting into the act, offering Mexican-themed drinks and dishes. Among them are Antietam (a drink dubbed "El Poco Querido" and cajeta flan), El Asador Steakhouse (pork in yellow moleguajillo and poblano chiles), El Barzón (Oaxacan mole negro), El Zocalo (on "Frida Fridays"), Gold Cash Gold (a drink called "Frida's Blue House"), Las Cazuelas Grill (mole poblano), Rock City Eatery (panzón and friducha), and Union Street (drinks named "Ode to Detroit Industry" and "La Casa Azul" and picadillo-stuffed poblano chiles). Surf, turf, and sushi — Ocean Prime has pretty much everything that's decadent on its menu: Chilean sea bass in Champagne truffle sauce, a colossal shrimp sauté appetizer, and aged prime steaks done to order, with béarnaise sauce, black truffle butter, au poivre or more. (A Wine Spectator-honored wine list doesn't hurt, either.) But now Ocean Prime has sushi as well, and it's appropriately grand.
