Motor City Brewing Works:
Motor City Brewing Works turned 20 this year, making them the city's oldest brewery. In their location across from Traffic Jam & Snug on West Canfield in Midtown they make unfiltered, unpasteurized, ultra-fresh beers. The brewery itself was built with scrap materials and equipment salvaged from Detroit's industrial era. Basically, they were hip before there were hipsters.
The beer makers will be at the Detroit Fall Beer Festival at Eastern Market this Friday and Saturday, October 24-25, with a selection of their brews. We've profiled two of the offerings they'll have in tow.
Ghettoblaster ( 4.2% ABV | 15 IBU )
Arguably, Ghettoblaster put Motor City Brewing Works on the map. It's available year-round and has become a staple for those who love Michigan craft beers. Light in both body and alcohol content, this beer is a classic English-style mild ale. It pours a tawny color and has an earthy nose of lemongrass, red grapes, toffee, and pears, and a clean, crisp biscuit flavor. It's available in 12-ounce bottles and kegs.
Pale Ale ( 5.2% ABV | 33 IBU )
Another of their year-round offerings, Motor City Pale Ale is a little higher in alcohol content than its brother Ghettoblaster, but not by much. It pours a pale golden color with a little haze and leaves a nice lacing on the glass, if drinking out of a glass is your thing. The 33 IBUs give it a subtle, but noticeable hop presence. It has a full, malty body with a nice, subtle tart underneath. It's mild, smooth, and lightly carbonated. It's available in 12-ounce bottles, as well as kegs. Fun fact: This was the first beer made at Motor City Brewing Works brewing facility.
