Dangerously Delicious Pies shuts down its Wyandotte location, will not open in Hamtramck

(Update on 8/16: The Ghost Light in Hamtramck says Dangerously Delicious Pies will not be opening a location inside its venue. Dangerously Delicious owner Rodney Henry told the Metro Times on 8/15 that the new location would open in September, but Ghost Light says the deal was never finalized. Henry said a disagreement after the 8/15 story ran killed the deal.)

Even from Texas where he was staying for the last few months, Dangerously Delicious Pies owner Rodney Henry could sense something was amiss at his metro Detroit locations.

The same eight pies were rolling out each week, there weren't enough shows, and coffee wasn't always made. Then he started getting calls from employees who said they weren't getting paid.

The problem: The metro Detroit staff had lost its passion, and the operations were being run "half-assed," Henry says.

"If I had any hair on my head, I'd be pulling it out," he tells Metro Times. "It has to be 100 percent bad ass. It has to be top notch. It has to be a cool experience for everyone - the people working there, and the people coming in checking it out."

To remedy the situation, Henry is closing down Dangerously Delicious's Wyandotte location, and parted ways with most of his staff at his Detroit and Wyandotte stores. He said all parties seem to be relieved, though some former employees tell Metro Times they disagree with Henry's assessment of the situation.

He's hiring all new staff – bakers, baristas, counter help, managers – to run his temporarily closed Midtown shop, which will reopen on Aug. 31. 

Henry also planned a location in The Ghost Light, but he said that fell through after a story announcing it ran yesterday afternoon. It appears Henry and Ghost Light's owners had some sort of disagreement that killed the plans. Henry now tells Metro Times that he's only going to focus on getting the Midtown location back up and running.

"I can't really take all this shit over by myself, so I'm not going to mess with trying put [another location] together right now," Henry tells MT.

Dangerously Delicious was founded in Baltimore and now runs six locations nationwide, and Henry says he's excited to reboot in metro Detroit.

"The business needs love so hard - it needs attention. When you walk into the place, you don't want to talk to someone who is a straight dud. You want to talk to someone who's passionate about what they're doing," he tells us. "It will be good, positive changes for the business and customers."
