This is not your typical bar and it will never be mistaken for a sports bar. The huge vats visible through the front windows tell you that this is a microbrewery. The clean and elegant interior fits well with the location in Plymouth’s historic “old-village” area. The rich natural woods and burnished brass of the bar help to set the tone. One glass wall affords a view of the vats and brewing area from the small barroom. There is a much larger room upstairs that’s only open on weekend evenings. The one small television screen over the bar lets you know that they are not sports-centered. Although the TV will be tuned to the local games, this place is serious about beer. A meticulously crafted assortment of small batch ales and lagers is served by an attentive waitstaff in an atmosphere of quiet conversation.

If you like beers with character, you will enjoy the Liberty Brewing Company. There are typically 14 selections of beer available at any one time, with alcohol by volume varying from 4 percent to more than 9 percent. There is usually at least one beer devoted to the particular season, the newest seasonal offering being “Punkin’ Pie Ale.” Don’t be put off by the name. Although there is a hint of the spices used in pumpkin pie, the taste is definitely one of beer. There is even a gluten-free beer available. Their 5-ounce sampler glass is well-suited for those unfamiliar with Liberty’s beers. You can order four samplers at a time if you want to try their current brews. This is a great way to find which beer is most agreeable to your palate. Once you have decided which beer is for you, they have 64-ounce bottles called “growlers,” which you can purchase and take home.

Bottled Liberty Street Brewing Co. beers are available in all of the better beer stores in the metro Detroit area. For those who want a non-alcoholic beverage, they also serve their own house-blended root beer, or you can order Caribou Coffee, which is brewed one cup at a time when ordered. In another deviation from the typical bar, Liberty Street’s hours are 3 p.m. to midnight most days, a little later on weekends. Though the bar has its own limited menu of food, the staff will happily supply you with the menus of several local restaurants that can deliver right to your table.

Liberty Street Brewing Company is at 149 W. Liberty St., Plymouth; 734-207-9600.
