Brew Detroit, a cornerstone of Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood and a key player in Michigan’s craft beer scene, has announced the closure of its taproom at 1401 Abbott St.
The final day of operations will be Jan. 31.
The brewery, which opened in 2014 as a contract brewing facility, transitioned to a community-focused taproom in 2015. Over the years, Brew Detroit became known for its original creations like the Mexican lager Cerveza Delray and for brewing well-known beers under contract, including Stroh’s Bohemian Lager and Kid Rock’s Badass American Lager.
In a heartfelt announcement, the company expressed gratitude to its patrons and collaborators.
“When we opened our Taproom in 2015, we sought to offer a variety of exceptional beers. What we found was community, through the exceptional people who decided to fill our space and collaborate with us over the years,” Brew Detroit wrote on Facebook.
The closure comes amid challenging times for Michigan’s craft beer industry, which has seen several closures in the past year, including Ascension Brewing Co. in Novi, Jamex Brewing Co. in St. Clair Shores, and Arctic Circle Brewing Co. in Chesterfield.
These economic pressures have prompted Brew Detroit to refocus its efforts solely on beer production and distribution, continuing to serve its own labels and those of its contract partners.
“After 1/31/25 our focus will solely be on the production and distribution of our beer,” Brew Detroit wrote on social media. “Until then, come celebrate this last month of the Taproom with us!”
Housed in a 68,000-square-foot former Detroit Ball Bearing Co. building, Brew Detroit’s taproom featured a second-floor event space and, since 2022, a farm-to-table kitchen. The taproom’s legacy includes hosting community events, partnering with local businesses, and serving as a gathering space for Detroiters.
Before closing, Brew Detroit will celebrate its tenure with a release party for Depth V, the latest in its bourbon barrel-aged stout series. Details for the event will be shared on social media.
“It has been our honor and privilege to serve the Corktown and Detroit community for the last decade,” the company said.
