Black Lotus took home the gold in the “strong ale beer style” category for the brewery’s Ninja-Pirate Barley Wine. Don’t let the name fool you, The Ninja-Pirate is a beer and it boasts a 13.2 percent ABV. Yowza!
According to Black Lotus, “Ninja-Pirate is full-bodied, has a dark amber appearance, and although semi-sweet is well balanced with bittering hops and never cloying.”
Brewer and owner Mark Harper said he and his partner Mike Allan are “extremely proud of our team and especially head brewer Nick Joseph for this accomplishment.”
Gold award winners were decided by an international panel of 253 beer judges from 31 countries. Out of 6,596 entries from 1,907 breweries in 55 countries, Black Lotus was the only brewery in Michigan to earn a Gold award this year.
“We are overwhelmed and so happy to bring home a gold award to Michigan this year,” Harper said. “Moreover, it is extremely gratifying to let people know that Clawson, Michigan is now home to the best strong ale in the world!”
