American Coney Island opens registration for annual food fight

Do you think you have what it takes to be a Coney-eating champ? American Coney Island is inviting wannabe food fighters to compete in the 5th Annual Coney Eating Challenge, 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 3. The event starts with a coney challenge between Detroit Police and Detroit firefighters. Last year, the firefighters were crowned champions. Following the PD-FD battle, registered competitors will vie for tubed meat greatness.

Last year Matt Holowicki of Plymouth took home the glory, by scarfing down a wopping 17 ¾ coneys in 10 minutes. The winner will score a championship belt, a year’s worth of American Coney Island coneys and other prizes. Advanced registration is $10 and $15 on the day of the event. Spectators are asked to make a $5 donation.Event is open to the public with a suggested $5 donation. Proceeds will support the Detroit Police Fund and Detroit Firemen’s Benevolent Fund.
