Just after we get done wiping the crumbs of the coney paczki from our mouths the next coney fusion dish is here — the East African Swahili coney. The dish will be offered as part of the Swahili Coney pop up planned for Sunday, March 4 at El Club in Detroit.

Though it's something novel, this is clearly less gimmicky than the coney paczki. The one-night event is the product of Lucky Pistil Chef and Catering's Enid Parham and Laura Rwiliriza of Great Lakes United. Sunday's event is what they describe in a press release as a "cultural emulsion of food, art, and musical festivities." The menu includes:

  •  Crispy lime and ginger marinated wing dings with a buffalo peanut sauce.
  • Traditional coney dogs topped with goat chili and goat gouda.
  • A gyro offering consisting of an East African chapati wrap topped with curry yoghurt sauce and kachumbari relish.
  • Vegetarian choice of citrus poached sweet potato frites and sombe chili.

Rwiliriza says via a press release that Parham designed the menu based on Rwiliriza's knowledge and love of cooking traditional cuisine.

“Months of research, tastings, logistics, and mulling over specific details — me as a seasoned chef, her as a passionate home cook, and us as sisters — in paying homage to our respective cultures has gone into the creation of Swahili Coney” Parham adds.

According to the press release, the "culinary experience will be enjoyed to the sounds of rumba, Afrobeat, Motown classics and jazz."
