Detroit's own, In the Tradition Jazz Ensemble, will ignite the wintry night with "Seven Songs of Kwanzaa," a collection of original compositions and jazz standards devoted to the seven principles of the African-centered holiday. A candle is lit each day of the holiday to affirm the 7 Principles of Blackness: Unity (Umoja), Self-determination (Kujichagulia), Collective Responsibility (Ujima), Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa), Purpose (Nia), Creativity (Kuumba), and Faith (Imani). The principles are designed to foster strength and unity in the Black community.
Patrons can browse a marketplace of African-centered clothing, jewelry and books before the concert and at intermission.
