Royal Oak Live! Music Fest

Royal Oak Live! A two day free music festival featuring the finest local and national jazz, funk and R & B performers, returns to Royal Oak's Centennial Commons on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23. Launched last year, by the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, the two days of world class music, brought big crowds and proved a great way to highlight Royal Oak's recently opened Centennial Commons Downtown Park.

The festival opens on Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and continues until 7:45 p.m. each day. Royal Oak Live! is presented by Henry Ford Health.

"We were really thrilled with the terrific turnout and enthusiasm of the crowds last year when we launched Royal Oak Live!," says Artistic Director Alexander Zonjic, " That response was an inspiration to keep it going and this year we have a great line up, headlined by some of the most popular nationally known musical artists."

Zonjic is the well known, award winning jazz flutist, who is beloved in the Detroit area. He performs locally and across the country and produces successful music festivals throughout metro Detroit and elsewhere. He worked with the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce to create the music festival .

"Alexander plays multiple indoor and outdoor concerts and he was excited when the Centennial Commons opened a few years ago.," said Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce President, Shelly Kemp." Along with us he envisioned the possibilities for the space and helped spark the inaugural event last year - bringing in an exciting line up of local and national performers."

The all new Centennial Commons Downtown Park is located right in the heart of downtown Royal Oak between the City Hall and Library, at 204 S. Troy Street, just east of Main and south of 11 Mile. The totally reconfigured modern space features grassy knolls, sidewalks, picnic tables, tent areas and a live stage. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own chairs to enjoy two full days and evenings of great music.

The site is only about 100 feet away from the city's 11 Mile Road public parking deck where parking is free on Sunday . On Saturday, the first two hours of deck parking are free and 75 cents for each hour after that.

On Saturday, June 22 the festival will open with the Royal Oak Concert Band at 1:30 p.m. directed by Kevin R. Czarnik. The community band has been playing a large variety of concert music with volunteer musicians since it was established in 1963.

"We love that we can highlight them further to the community," said Kemp.

Music continues at 3:00 p.m. with Four80East , the exciting Toronto based electro-jazz duo. At 4:45 p.m. popular Detroit guitarist Tim Bowman pulls from a multitude of influences to create a sound that infuses gospel, blues R & B and jazz. At 6:30 p.m. nationally renowned saxophonist Jackiem Joyner, known for his contemporary jazz - urban sound, is joined by jazz pianist Brian Simpson for a stirring closing to the evening.

On Sunday, June 23 at 1:30 p.m. the festival opens with Angela Davis - Detroit Neo-Soul artist with powerful vocals and a smooth jazz twist. At 3 p.m. Grammy award winning keyboardist Gregg Karukas brings his positive attitude and dynamic performance to the stage. This is followed at 4:45 p.m. with jazz flutist Alexander Zonjic, himself, playing with special guest , pianist , composer, producer and arranger Demetrious "Krayon" Nabors. At 6:30 p.m. saxophonist, composer and contemporary jazz star, Marion Meadows takes the stage to bring the musical weekend to a thrilling close.

The festival will take place rain or shine and folks should bring their own chairs to settle in for two days of great music.

"We also want to remind people that the park is within Royal Oak's social district, " Kemp said. "so you can bring adult beverages from the bars and restaurants that participate in the social district such as Lockhardt's BBQ, Rock on Third and many others."

Attendees are encourage to grab lunch or dinner at one of the many downtown restaurants and get a drink to go. The social district takes in about 20 downtown bars and restaurants. Funk It Up Fries and Chicken Shack food trucks will be just just outside Centennial Commons during the music festival and the Ray's Ice Cream cart will be in the park.
