In keeping with the spirit of journalism, the Detroit Free Press sponsors the best documentary film festival in the region. But the spirit of it is the variety: Viewers won’t just find film after film about the plight of Detroit (though that topic is amply represented with such films as Fire Photo -> 1 and Internal Combustion; they’ll find music docs (Being: Kem), dance (The Jitterbugs: Pioneers of the Jit), even arresting documentary footage of Diego Rivera at work on his Detroit murals. One of the more intriguing pieces is 20 Years of Madness, chronicling the antics of a group of 1990s Rochester high school students who put together a public access sketch comedy show, and catching up with them 20 years later.
The festival runs through Sunday; For showtimes and more information check freepfilmfestival.com.
