Ann Arbor’s own nationally-known singer/songwriter, humorist and and compelling performer Dick Siegel and his trio will perform at Makeshift Gallery this Saturday (3/15/24) at 8pm. A long-time favorite, especially around the Midwest, Dick has spent 40 years crafting melodies and lyrics that can both haunt, uplift and inspire, as well as make you belly-laugh so hard your chest hurts. Songs like “The Waitress”, tells a story of sweet, true love for your partner; while “What Would Brando Do”, confronts crazy things that happen to all of us, and his method to deal with them.
Siegel teams up with guitarist, Dave Roof, and stand-up bassist Charlie Reischl to bring his exuberant music to life. His work has been described as "Strains of American folk, blues, jazz and R & B with a hint of Hank Williams, Louis Jordan, Dylan and Spike Jones. But all Dick Siegel.” And “He’s a big talent in an intimate setting.”
But music isn’t Dick’s only talent. The Gallery also has on display his wildly colorful artwork, which is just as spectacular as his songs; manipulating vivid, colorfully photographic images onto metal “canvasses”, combining photo-realism and the feel and colors of modern Art Deco. Inventing his technique to make these bold and vibrant images of sometimes very common things, reflects a long-time passion and an additional side to Ann Arbor’s favorite “folk singer”, of which his fans are unaware. Besides these large pieces, he also has note cards, magnets, mugs and T-shirts for sale.
Like all concerts at Makeshift, the ticket price is for more than just a concert. There will be light refreshments, including treats made by gallery artists. You can also bring your own beer or wine. Come enjoy the concert and party that features Ann Arbor’s own Dick Siegel.
