This historic mansion was designed for
Benjamin Siegel by renowned architect Albert Kahn, and built in 1914 in the heart of Detroit's Boston Edison district.
Initially listed in October 2023, the home recently got a price cut from $2,500,000 to $2,250,000.
The original owner was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1876, arriving in Detroit five years later. After managing a women’s apparel department at a store on Woodward Avenue, Siegel later purchased the shop and changed the name to B. Siegel Company. By 1904, he was selling upscale women’s and children’s clothes and furs to the silk stocking trade. After World War II, at least seven B. Siegel stores operated in the metropolitan area. Following Siegel's death in 1936, the company remained open until entering bankruptcy in 1981.
His 11,103-square-foot former home is nestled in a park-like setting, occupying half a block on 2.16 acres. The Italianate-style main house is a limestone masterpiece known for its detail, boasting an elevator, a sewing room, a game room, a balcony, and a motor court with a fountain. The home has seven bedrooms, four full bathrooms, two half baths, and six fireplaces, as well as a beautiful kitchen and two sunrooms.
A 1,303-square-foot carriage house also sits on the property, including two bedrooms, two full baths, and room for three cars. For plant lovers, the neatest part is the new 2022-built greenhouse created by Alitex Greenhouses featuring walls of glass and brick floors.
