They come with various names. Wyandotte has Pip's Painting Pub. Canton has Paint and Pour. There's Paint Party Royal Oak. In Ferndale, it's Painting with a Twist. These venues offer art classes wherein pupils paint while sipping on a glass or two of wine and nibbling little snacks and the concept is much beloved by moms, bachelorettes, and generally anyone who needs to feel a little artsy every once in a while.
Michelle Lewis discovered the concept while working in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Upon her return home to metro Detroit, she spotted a retail space for rent in downtown Ferndale and fell in love with the large, modern space. And that's where, in 2010, she opened Painting with a Twist.
Business boomed as people became acquainted with the concept and Lewis was able to open another location in Farmington just two years later. Fast forward to 2015 and she and her sister Donna Lewis are ready to welcome the public to Painting with a Twist's third location — this one inside the Julian C. Madison Building at 1420 Washington Ave. in Detroit.
Painting with a Twist's grand opening happens tonight, with such guests as city council members and even Mayor Duggan's Chief of Staff. Starting tomorrow, classes are open to the public. For more info click here.
