5 things to do in metro Detroit this Memorial weekend that will make you feel really American

Memorial weekend technically starts today, but if you're anything like us, you're probably still at work. But, if you happen to get an extra-long weekend, or just have an afternoon off between now and Tuesday, we thought you might want to do something super-American, since Memorial Day is about America.

Here are five Memorial Day festivals and events that are happening this weekend. We highly suggest you wear red, white, and blue while attending any of them.

St. Mary's Polish Country Fair
There's something about being Polish that feels so American, especially if you're from a community that's long celebrated the culture. St. Mary's Polish Country Fair is now in its 44th year, which makes it something of an institution. There will be carnival rides, a Las Vegas-style gambling tent, traditional Polish foods, and even some some barbecue from Yardbird Smoked Meats. It runs through Monday night and costs $5 to get in. The fair is located at St. Mary's College at 3535 Indian Trail in Orchard Lake.

Hazel Park Memorial Festival Carnival
A traditional carnival in many ways, the Hazel Park Memorial Festival Carnival will have a midway, petting zoo, a craft sale, bingo, a car show, and a refreshment tent. There will be live music from locals Longneck Strangler, Tino Gross, Arizon Son, and more. The fair takes place at Green Acres Park at 75 W. Woodward Heights Blvd. in Hazel Park and at the Hazel Park Community Center at 620 W Woodward Heights Blvd. in Hazel Park.

Rochester Heritage Days Festival
Now, what could make you feel more 'Murican than a lumberjack display? Perhaps a Civil War encampment followed by a car show? Rochester Heritage Day Festival offers all these exciting attractions along with craft shows, live animals, a pioneer homestead and playground, and also food. This festival kicks off on Saturday morning with a pancake breakfast at the community house accompanied by the musical stylings of a barbershop quartet. The festival takes place at Rochester Municipal Park, located at 608 Seventh Street in Rochester.

Memorial Weekend Barbecue and Music Festival
If music, barbecue, and booze aren't American then ... we don't want to America! Motor City Wine will host this weekend-long event on their patio with chef John Breeland grilling delicious eats and DJs spinning killer tunes. Motor City Wine is located at 1949 Michigan Ave., Detroit.
