Lost Girls
Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie
Top Shelf; $75
On the surface, this three-volume, hardcover, slipcased graphic novel is an elaborate Tijuana bible that casts grown-up versions of Wonderland's Alice, Dorothy of Oz and Wendy from Peter Pan as fuck buddies. Of course, Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta) could never write a simple stroke book any more than he could a simple superhero comic. Lost Girls probes the nether regions of those classic fables and exposes some very hot and sometimes harrowing new perspectives on their characters. Released despite fears of legal and financial peril for its publisher, it's beautifully illustrated in full color by former undergrounder Gebbie in a style that would make Beardsley smile.
