Running to keep warm: Would you run 10K to help a needy family? No? Well, would you walk five? Participants in the Detroit Health and Human Services Department’s Heat the Streets Run and Walk for Warmth can choose the 10K run, the 5K walk or a slightly less intimidating 5K run. The proceeds from the event will go to help low-income Detroiters cover utility costs. You must register to participate in the run, and you can do so online at heatthestreets.org or in person at Compuware Global Headquarters, Friday, Feb. 25, 3-8 p.m. If you’re not online but want more information, call 313-887-1173. This is the first year for Heat the Streets. The department hopes to raise $500,000.
Havana talk: Detroit City Council President Maryann Mahaffey is inviting folks to a program called “Peace with Cuba … What it Means to Americans” at the Southfield Public Library, 2-4 p.m., Feb. 19. The doctor is in: Palestinian presidential candidate Dr. Mustafa Barghouti is set to speak at Dearborn’s Greenfield Manor at 5 p.m., Feb. 27. Barghouti will speak about the state of Palestinian affairs. Tickets to the dinner event are $50. Proceeds benefit the event’s sponsor, Palestine Office-Michigan.
