You might expect to read a plug for a music/theater event in the arts section of this fine publication. But this little gem — which incidentally will be performed at the Gem Theatre — is News Hits worthy. Here’s why: All proceeds from the show go to the Detroit-based group Wellness House and New York’s Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS — very fine organizations that help prevent HIV/AIDS and provide care to those infected with this dastardly disease. So if you can spare $40 for a ticket to Circle of One, a cabaret-style performance put on by the cast and crew of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, please do. But if you can’t attend the one-night performance Feb. 26 (Monday), why not purchase a ticket for a friend or make a donation directly to Wellness House? After all this tiny organization provides food, shelter and health care to 12 homeless people living with HIV/AIDS and meals to 420 people a month, is scraping to stay alive on the kindness of strangers. (By the way, Wellness House executive director Rob Fetzer says that Detroit has about 1,050 homeless people with HIV/AIDS and his group and one other — which has only six beds — are the only organizations in the city offering this level of care.) That’s why your help is direly needed. And if you attend the event, be sure to send our regards to Gem Theatre owner Charles Forbes, who generously donated this space. Thanks, Chuck.
