Chief Keef, Chance the Rapper, and Kanye West: It could be argued that Chicago is a breeding ground for gifted emcees. Moving up in the ranks is 22-year-old Lucki — who first stunned with his 2013 debut, Alternative Trap.
Having openly struggled with addiction, which put much of his life on pause, Lucki reemerged this year with the critically acclaimed mixtape Freewave 3. Written in two parts (one while the young rapper was in love, the other written in its wake) Freewave 3 goes back to the basics — clean production and intimate songwriting. “She want me off them Percs, she say she sick of us/ For life, that’s my baby, don’t need my sippy cup,” he admits on “Of Course You Won’t” — just one example of Lucki’s ability to confront and look up.
Lucki will perform wsg at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, at El Club; 4114 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit; 313-279-7382; elclubdetroit.com. Tickets are $20+.
