The Dave Sharp’s Secret Seven’s Worlds (Vortex Jazz Recordings) sees Detroit musician Sharp assemble a group of some of the region’s best jazz and world music players, and piece together a slab of work that sees Michigan and the rest of the world collide in a whirr of gorgeous vocals and delicate, intricate musicianship. According to the press release, “While earning a degree from the University of Michigan, Sharp became deeply devoted to the study of jazz and the perfection of his art. This devotion culminated in a move to San Francisco where Dave studied jazz and music theory with legendary bassist Herbie Lewis (McCoy Tyner, Cannonball Adderley, Les McCann) at the New College in California.” That experience has served Sharp well, and this record sees him pull in the likes of Cheikh Lo (Senegal), Parthiv Gohil (India) and Mehdi Darvishi (Iran). It could have been an almighty mess, but with Sharp’s guidance every element seems like a natural fit. Beautiful.
