Hailed as the “finest rock songwriter after Bob Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Jimi Hendrix” by the Los Angeles Times, Richard Thompson is rock ’n’ roll’s longstanding secret weapon. Thompson started out as a member of 1970s British folk-rock outfit Fairport Convention and has since gone on to build a career spanning 51 years, and 22 studio records which have garnered the 69-year-old an Ivor Novello award for his acoustic achievements and a BBC Radio lifetime achievement award. His latest record, 2018’s 13 Rivers, finds the troubadour energized and singing about everything from the end of days to baking cupcakes.
Richard Thompson will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14 at the Majestic Theatre; 4140 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313-833-9700; majesticdetroit.com; Tickets are $35-$40.
