Rhiannon Giddens has a heavy heart — and we are grateful that she wants to share the entirety of its contents with us.

The singer-songwriter and banjo goddess is a recipient of the
MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, and is also a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. In 2017 the North Carolina native released Freedom Highway, her second solo record, inspired by Civil War-era slave narratives. The record was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 Americana Music Honors & Awards. Through the pains of the past, Giddens shines a light on a brighter future with the power of her storytelling.

Rhiannon Giddens will perform at Michigan Theater on Friday, May 18; Doors open at 8 p.m.; 603 E. Liberty St., Ann Arbor; 734-668-8397; michtheater.org; Tickets are $30.
