The national "Weird Homes Tour" will visit Detroit for the first time this summer, and tour organizers are looking for the Motor City's quirkiest, most eccentric homes to show off. (We'd say Detroit's Lion Gate Estate would make a pretty good contender. Or maybe Southwest Detroit's geodesic dome?) The tour will be held in Detroit on from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25.
The tour was founded in Austin, Texas in 2014 "with a vision to showcase the places that make cities fun, irreverent and strange, and to give people a glimpse into these authentic dwellings, many of them home to local artists, performers and creatives," according to a press release. After previous stops in Austin, Houston, and New Orleans, this year the tour has added Detroit and Portland to its roster. It promises a "self-paced, self-driving tour," where "visitors will see eight to ten of the most eccentric, funky, extraordinary, offbeat, magical, and 'weird' homes Detroit has to offer."
Think your weird home fits the bill? The Weird Homes Tour is looking for homes to feature on the tour. Interested weird homeowners can submit their home for consideration here.
Ticket purchase includes a map of the homes. Tickets are $30 to see eight to ten homes, and $45 to attend the full tour experience and have "exclusive
access to one VIP house." Tickets can be purchased here.
Organizers say the tour will give back to the community by donating 10 percent
of earnings to the United Community Housing Coalition to support affordable housing.
