Ofrendas from the DIA’s 2014 exhibit
The Detroit Institute of Arts is once again inviting artists to submit proposals for
ofrendas for this year's
Día de los Muertos.
An ofrenda, or "offering," is a collection of objects placed at an altar to honor the deceased on the Día de los Muertos ("Day of the dead"). Traditionally, they are adorned with
calaveras (sugar skulls), flowers, photographs, or favorite food — but the DIA gives artists a chance to use the folk art form to get conceptual.
Proposals are due by end of day Monday, Sept. 28. Selected artists will be notified by Friday, Oct. 2. Participating artists will receive a stipend and payment for materials. For more information and to submit a proposal, visit
