After the Michigan-based bookstore chain Borders closed up shop and Royal Oak's Barnes & Noble transformed into a Buffalo Wild Wings, it was easy for book lovers to feel woe and dismay that their days of browsing through a stock of sweet-smelling new volumes had come to an end.
Of course, those who love little independently owned bookstores know that this isn't true. While the metro area isn't exactly littered with them, there are a few small yet admirable shops that help connect readers with the tomes they desire. Source Booksellers is one of those shops. Formerly located inside the Spiral Collective on Cass in Midtown, the shop moved to its own space just down the street in 2013.
Proprietor Janet Webster Jones has been in the bookselling business for nearly three decades. The retired Detroit Public Schools teacher began selling books at a church bazaar and later started what would be known in today's world as a pop-up shop.
After successfully running her business inside the Spiral Collective for over a decade, Webster Jones moved to the new space, expanding the store's collection of nonfiction texts. Shoppers can find a trove of books on history and culture, health and well-being, metaphysics and spirituality, and more. She also makes sure to stock books by and about women.
While Source Booksellers has a splendid collection of texts, their shelves are home to more than just that. They have world maps, raw snacks, fair trade chocolates, and other trinkets available for purchase as well.
Source also hosts in-store events like a Saturday chair yoga session and other mind, body, and spirit classes. They're free, but donations are encouraged. March, which is Women's History month, promises specially themed activities like mapping Detroit and spring equinox highlights, among other things.
