Palmer Park's Log Cabin Day is this Sunday

If you're anything like us, you're probably already plying together plans for the weekend, hoping to get the most out of the two free days you have each week. Well, here's an event to consider for this Sunday. Log Cabin Day celebrates the historic log cabin that stands in the park. And there will be free ice cream.

Perhaps the most special part of the event is that the log cabin, which was built by Senator Thomas W. Palmer for his wife Lizzie in 1885, will be open for a rare tour. The historic structure features an American Jewel stove, which was a state-of-the-art contraption in its day, as well as an indoor privy that was one of the first of its kind. 

In addition to tours of the cabin, guests are invited to make hats and participate in a Mad Hatter and Bonnet contest. There will be a Native American exhibit, African American quilters, blacksmithing demonstrations from CJ Forge, square dancing, a live performance by Lac La Belle, face painting and more. Suffice it to say, it's a family friendly event. 

Food from Good Cakes & Bakes and People's Pierogi will be available alongside kettle corn from Mystic Kettle Popcorn, Detroit Bold Coffee, and that free ice cream for the first 500 guests from Guernsey Farms. Fun fact: the family that runs Guernsey Farms are descendants of those who helped build the cabin.
