Detroit is getting a new comedy club — just in time for Valentine’s Day, for anyone looking for a cute date idea.
The Comedy Bar is set to open on the lower level of The Norwood, a refurbished historic theater that was redeveloped in 2023 at 6531 Woodward Ave. in Detroit’s New Center area.
It’s the first location outside of Chicago for the comedy club chain, which was founded in 2011.
“We’re thrilled to be part of the revitalization of the New Center neighborhood,” co-owner Sahar Lane said in a statement. “It was always important to us to find a venue within Detroit city proper and we took our time to find the right location. Opening in such a beautifully restored, historic venue on Woodward Avenue gives us the chance to contribute positively to the community’s rich culture and this town’s ongoing growth. Being a Chicago native, Detroit is the only other place that has ever felt like home and we’re excited to bring humor to our new home.”
The venue’s operating partners are Scott Rutterbush, Michael Labombard, and Shelby Baron, who all hail from the Detroit area.
According to the venue, the Detroit location can seat 175 guests or 500 for larger events. The owners bill it as a “speakeasy-inspired comedy experience” with a craft cocktail menu and “proximity to some of Detroit’s best restaurants.”
The Comedy Bar says it will seek diverse comedians from Detroit and beyond, ranging from up-and-comers to established stars. Headliners booked so far include Calvin Evans, Stef Dag, Mike Stanley, Sam Tripoli, Abbas Wahab, Anthony “Scruncho” McKinley, Indi Remy, and “My Cousin Tiera” Oleary.
The grand opening event for the Detroit location is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14.
