Doug Aitken: Mirage Detroit (Rendering), 2018 Courtesy of the artist and Library Street Collective. Photo by Doug Aitken Workshop.
In the case of revered contemporary artist Doug Aitken, a mirage is a vessel for conversation. Mirage Detroit is a sculpture constructed inside downtown’s long-abandoned former State Savings Bank. The immersive installation, in the form of a suburban American home made out of mirrors, will reflect the space that encases it and the unique interior it creates. The installation will also feature lighting by Andi Watson — known for his stage work with Radiohead, as well as the interior of Detroit’s Deluxx Fluxx. Jónsi of Sigur Rós will also perform.
The Mirage Detroit by Doug Aitken event begins 8 p.m.-11 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the former State Savings Bank; 151 Fort St., Detroit; RSVP to info@miragedetroit.com; General admission is free, RSVP required, sensible footwear requested.
