Though the fall colors around these parts tend to get all the press, it’s the colors on display in metro-area galleries this month that’ll grab you gently by the arm and whisper “Take me home” in your ear. Picking five of the most seductive shows in town is a tough proposition, but come-hither looks from a whole range of media — oil painting, watercolor, photography, sculpture — will make retinal stimulation in the next few weeks start to feel like sensory overload.
In oil-on-panel paintings such as “Water Murmurs,” Janet Hamrick takes tender wisps of lyricism and turns them into the subtlest of narratives. “Dreamwalk,” her stunning show of new work at Lemberg Gallery (23241 Woodward Ave., Ferndale — 248-591-6623), is up through Dec. 1.
John Ganis sees the hiding places of poetic form in the natural world and makes them into photographs such as “Potash Evap. Ponds, Canyonlands, UT.” He’s one of “5 from DETROIT” (along with Patrick Burton, James Chatelain, Brenda Goodman and Peter Williams), a show for Detroit’s 300th birthday at Revolution (23257 Woodward Ave., Ferndale — 248-541-3444) through Dec. 1.
From Nov. 17 to Jan. 12, an intimate exhibition titled “Urban Abstracts” pairs sculptor Chris Turner with painter Lenore Gimpert at Sherry Washington Gallery (in the L.B. King Building, 1274 Library St., downtown Detroit — 313-961-4500). In Turner’s gutsy steel pieces, the industrial and the surreal enter into world-making collaboration.
Imaginary beings in dreamlike focus populate the paintings of Renata Palubinskas, as in this untitled oil on canvas from “Transience,” one of three new shows opening at CPOP Gallery (4160 Woodward Ave., Detroit — 313-833-9901) on Saturday, Nov. 3 (reception 6-11 p.m.). Also on view are Matt Gordon (“Optimist Park: Ethereal Thesis”) and Ryan Lee (“New Works”) through Nov. 25.
“The Last Daffodil,” one of New York multimedia artist Lucio Pozzi’s “rag rug paintings,” is featured in “Art as Game as Art,” his exhibition of current and past works opening Saturday, Nov. 10 (6:30-10 p.m.) at MONA, the Museum of New Art (1249 Washington Blvd., Book Building, Suite 200, downtown Detroit — 313-961-2845) and running through Jan. 6. On Nov. 11, Pozzi will perform Guided Tour, a piece specially prepared for the site.
