27 FRI • MUSIC Jackson Browne — To an artist like Jackson Browne, a stage is only the beginning — he’s both a pop star and a political activist, hardly your typical celebrity. Browne’s songs like “Running on Empty” and “Lawyers in Love” can be heard as a sound track to the late ’70s and early ’80s. No fig leaf here, folks, this gang of rockers has unabashedly kicked audiences’ asses up, over, sideways and under for nine years now and there is no end in sight. From beautifully executing covers of Bowie’s “It Ain’t Easy” to sharing the stage with the likes of Queens of the Stone Age and Deep Purple, Five Horse Johnson is dirty, apocalyptic blues-rock served with a sneer. 27 FRI • ART Bob-Lo Island Photography Exhibition — Photographer Bill Rauhauser began documenting his love affair with Bob-Lo in the 1940s. The affair went on for decades as he chronicled the Downriver island amusement park that finally closed in 1993. This old-time exhibition will refresh fond memories for many Detroiters — and stir a bit of regret for those who never rode the merry-go-round and felt the summer breeze off the water. In conjunction with a book signing for Bob-Lo Revisited, by Martin Magid, in which Rauhauser’s photos appear, this is nostalgia incarnate. At Book Beat (26010 Greenfield Road, Oak Park). 28 SAT • ART “Brothers” — “We believe in diversity,” says gallery owner Marty Quiroz. “The point of the gallery is to unite different cultures in the area.” Nestled sweetly at Cass and Palmer in Detroit, 5500 Cass attracts its fair share of window shoppers. Unobtrusive and inviting, this quaint substratum showroom is a gathering place for artists and neighborhood folk alike. And the newest exhibit, “Brothers” is an offering from “spiritual brothers,” artists and gallery co-owners, Marty Quiroz and Gregos.
